As with job searches for any field, your resume can make or break your chances of being called for an interview. Although many human services positions rely heavily on company applications, having a stand-out resume can help you obtain the job you desire.

Careers in human services require specific strengths that go beyond those you might list on a resume for other types of jobs. Strengths like being a hard worker or being able to multitask are beneficial to note, but focusing on human services strengths is advisable for highlighting the contributions you can make to the agency or company.

An effective human services resume attracts the reader to your individual abilities and capabilities, says the Human Services Career Network. Some of the human services strengths you might consider listing include excellent interpersonal skills, effective communication skills or foreign language abilities. The structure of your resume largely depends on your personal preference and the focus of the company, but include a section that indicates the relevant coursework you've taken that may be pertinent to the position, advises career coordinator Kim O'Ryan in a publication for social work majors at Cleveland State University.

Including this information is especially advisable if you do not have a lot of previous work experience in the field. For example, if you are applying for a position as a group facilitator, include information about any group therapy or group counseling courses you've completed. If you are applying for a position as a substance abuse counselor, include relevant coursework like assessment and treatment of alcohol and substance abuse.

Human services professionals often feel as though their accomplishments and achievements can't be effectively quantified, but this is generally not the case. O'Ryan points out that quantifying your accomplishments is a crucial component of a human services resume. This section reflects the ways you have helped specific clients or made a difference in previous employment settings. You might include information like "Led a recovery group of 10 adult clients to help them achieve sobriety" or "Facilitated an educational group of teen girls on abstinence from sex, drugs and alcohol.

Employers won't always assume you have the necessary or relevant certifications or licenses needed for the job. Not all human services positions require certification or licensing, but always include any credentials you currently hold. In addition to listing your certifications and licenses, make note of any recent or pertinent trainings you've attended to let your potential employer know you are interested in professional development and you stay current in your field, says human resources professional Joe Stein in an article for WNYJobs.
